Barak suspends peace process, Arafat defiant
Israeli helicopter gunships and tanks did the
talking for Israel after the Prime Minister, Mr. Ehud Barak,
announced the suspension of the moribund peace process and the
Palestinian leader, Mr. Yasser Arafat, told him to ``go to
hell''.
LTTE destroys naval craft
Explosive-packed boats of the Liberation Tigers
of Tamil Eelam breached the high-security Trincomalee harbour
early today and destroyed at least one naval craft, while rebel
units on the ground shot down an Air Force helicopter in the
fierce land battle that followed.
PM attends to work from home
The Prime Minister, Mr. A.B. Vajpayee, is
back at work, though operating from his residence. Returning from
Mumbai after a knee-joint surgery, he was reported to be
attending to the backlog of files needing his attention. ``The
Prime Minister is attending to file work and also taking
telephone calls,'' according to one of his aides.
Govt. refutes Jethmalani's charges
The Vajpayee Government lost no time
debunking the former law minister, Mr. Ram Jethmalani's
insinuation that the Chief Justice of India, Dr. Justice A.S.
Anand, had probably misreported his age.

The former Law Minister, Mr. Ram Jethmalani,
who has raised a controversy about the age of the Chief Justice
of India, Dr. Justice A.S. Anand, in his book Big Egos, Small Men
said today that the CJI should have retired in 1999, if his
original year of birth was taken as 1934.
Infiltration continues: Fernandes
The Defence Minister, Mr. George Fernandes,
today said infiltration from across the border was on the
increase in Jammu and Kashmir but ruled out a repetition of the
Kargil conflict.
Goa trust vote today
The Goa Chief Minister, Mr. Francisco Sardinha,
had a series of meetings with his party legislators and all
Ministers today and remained in touch with ``like-minded
parties'' to work out the strategy for tomorrow's crucial trial
of strength in the Assembly, Goa People's Congress sources said.
16 killed by ultras
Sixteen persons, including a three year old
boy, were killed and seven injured by unknown gunmen in two
separate incidents in the Tinsukia district of upper Assam last
evening.
Attack on church
Two persons were injured when they were attacked
by a group of armed miscreants in a church at Dighore, in the
city outskirts, yesterday.
