CPI(M) worker killed, Taliparamba tense

By Our Staff Reporter

KANNUR, NOV. 11. A CPI(M) worker was hacked to death by unidentified assailants at Taliparamba here today.

Police identified the deceased as CPI(M) activist and autorickshaw driver, Vayalapravan Krishnan (22), son of Kunhappa at Panniyur. He was found murdered in a deserted spot near the Tagore Vidyanikethan School at Taliparamba. The police said the assailants were suspected to have hired his autorickshaw for a trip and brought him to the spot. The murder took place around

1-30 p.m., the police said. Krishnan was an accused in some recent cases of political violence at Taliparamba, the police said. Though the assailants were yet to be identified, the police did not rule out the possibility of political rivalry in the murder.

The incident was preceded by the manhandling of some IUML workers by a group of alleged CPI(M) workers at Kurumathur near Taliparamba in the morning. The police said the IUML workers who were accused in a ballot-box snatching case at Kurumathur during the recent polling, were returning in a jeep after they came to the Taliparamba police station for routine signing when they were roughed up.

As Taliparamba witnessed recurrent clashes between CPI(M) and IUML workers, the police were keeping vigil to avert any law and order trouble. The Kannur SP, Mr. S. Gopinath, is camping in the area.

Panniyur and nearby areas, however, were tense following the killing. A ration shop of an IUML worker, Musthafa, at Pallivayal, was set on fire and the house of another IUML worker, M. Moideen Haji, was damaged by irate CPI(M) workers at 7 p.m.

The CPI(M) has called for a hartal tomorrow in Taliparamba municipality and Pattuvam, Pariyaram and Kurumathur panchayats.
