Huge voter turnout for Congress presidential poll
The long and high-spirited battle for the
Congress presidency came to an end this evening. The
election, necessitated by Mr. Jitendra Prasada's decision to
challenge party president, Ms. Sonia Gandhi, was marked by a huge
voter turnout and stray clashes between rival supporters,
particularly in Lucknow and Chennai.
Prasada supporters lathicharged
The Congress presidential elections was marked
by high drama with supporters of Mr. Jitendra Prasada and Mrs.
Sonia Gandhi raising high-pitch slogans at the State party
headquarters here which was placed under virtual siege by the
security forces.
Half my job is done: Madhavan

New Mexico police impound ballots
In an indication of the widening battle
between the Republicans and the Democrats over the outcome of the
presidential election of November 7, the State Police in New
Mexico have started impounding ballots after lawyers of the Grand
Old Party asked the courts for protection for early voting and
absentee ballots.
Will the wedlock untie the knot?
The wedding of the daughter of the Jammu and
Kashmir Liberation Front chief, Mr. Amanullah Khan, with the son
of senior Hurriyat leader, Mr. Abdul Gani Lone, scheduled for
November 19 in Rawalpindi is proving troublesome for all
concerned.
Maran 'improving'
The condition of the ailing Industry Minister,
Mr.Murasoli Maran, has `definitively improved' and he would
neither have to undergo any further surgical procedure for his
heart problem nor have to go abroad for treatment, according to
Dr.Pratap C. Reddy, Chairman of the Apollo Hospitals here.
Gopal yet to leave Chennai
Even as the Tamils' Nationalist leader,
Mr.P.Nedumaran, and the two human rights activists accompanying
him are learnt to have reached Erode today, the `Nakkeeran'
Editor and the Government emissary, Mr.R.R.Gopal, is yet to leave
city for Sathyamangalm forest to resume negotiations with the
Brigand to secure the release of Mr.Rajkumar.
Gujarat Minister resigns
The Gujarat Health and Civil Supply
Minister, Mr. Ashok Bhatt, chargesheeted in a 1985 anti-
reservation riot case in Ahmedabad, today resigned from the
Keshubhai Patel Ministry on ``moral grounds.'' He told
presspersons he resigned to seek justice from the court.
