Christians condemn 'renewed attacks'
By Our Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD, DEC. 1. The All-India Christian Council (AICC) has
condemned ``the renewed attacks on churches and the clergy'', as
reflected by five fresh incidents in different parts of the
country recently, and urged the Prime Minister, Mr. A.B.
Vajpayee, to take action to check the RSS and the VHP.
The AICC deputed a fact-finding team from here to Surat in
Gujarat where, according to reports, a church belonging to the
Evangelical Church of India, was ``ransacked'' and the cross
replaced by some idols allegedly by RSS/VHP activists on Sunday
night.
A statement issued here on Friday, signed by Dr. Joseph D' Souza,
Mr. John Dayal, Mr. Sam Paul, president, secretary-general and
information officer respectively, and other church leaders, said,
Rev. Ezra Sargunam of Chennai, a bishop, was on a fast today at
Vyara, Surat, protesting the desecration, while Christians held a
protest demonstration at Shastri Bhavan in Chennai.
