Couple accepts baby after DNA test

WARANGAL, DEC. 1. The six-day ordeal of the girl child who was rejected by her mother shortly after birth at the CKM Government Maternity Hospital here ended on a happy note on Friday with the DNA test on the baby and its parents confirming that the couple were the biological parents of the child.

The mother, Mrs. T. Umadevi, and her relatives accepted the child without any resistance after the report of the DNA test conducted at the CCMB, Hyderabad, was read out to them by doctors in the presence of the police at the hospital.

The report of the test was brought from Hyderabad by the police in a sealed cover in the early hours and handed over to the doctors of CKM Hospital. A team of doctors and the police then proceeded to the MGM Hospital, where the baby was put on fluids at the paediatric ward. The baby was taken to the CKM Hospital and given to the mother.

Mrs. Umadevi's husband, Mr. Yadagiri, on accepting the baby, tendered an apology to the doctors and other hospital staff for the controversy which, he said, was needlessly raked up by his mother-in-law, Mrs. Yakamma, out of ignorance. The mother and the baby were discharged from the hospital later.

Even as the contents of the sealed cover were made known, the hospital doctors and para-medical staff striked work and staged a dharna in the premises demanding action against Mrs. Umadevi and her relatives for defaming them. The staff have also lodged a complaint against the woman with the police for assault of a midwife who handled the child after the delivery. Separate representations demanding action against Mrs. Umadevi and her relatives were also given to the Superintendent of Police and in- charge Collector.

The Intezargunj police have registered a case acting on the complaints but were not in favour of arresting the couple or Mrs. Yakamma as the woman needed to give attention to the child immediately.
