Luring viewers
`CHINNA KUYILI' hopes to rescue Doordarshan. It wants to bring
back to the channel the audience it has lost.
Being telecast during the last four weeks, `Chinna Kuyili' is an
adaption of Sujatha's novel of the same name. The 13-week serial
is telecast between 7-30 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Tuesdays.
A Tamil Singaporean businessman returns to his village - Chinna
Kuyili. He establishes a trust, of which, his son, played by
Rahman, is in charge.
A village girl, Rekha, is forced into marriage and rescued by
Rahman. He returns to Singapore, but leaves his love behind.
From here the story is set in Singapore. He arranges for Rekha to
join him. But she is lost, and the drama unfolds.
Sujatha's original was set mostly in the village. But the
locations had to be inverted in the tele-adaption.
The Singapore-based company that produced the serial preferred
that Dr. S. Krishnaswamy, the director, set the theme in
Singapore for their audience.
Dr. Krishnaswamy, of Krishnaswamy Associates, said the response
there has been great even among non-Tamils. The sub-titles did
the trick.
Even if DD has good programmes, in the final analysis the
telecast is of poor quality. Is it a problem with DD's
transmission, or the `dirty tricks' adopted by cable operators?
