Hollowness of claims
Sir, - This is with reference to the announcement of ceasefire by
the Army in Jammu and Kashmir. It is a very bold measure
especially when forces in the valley are out to torpedo it. The
Hizb chief, Syed Salahuddin's claim of Indian complicity in the
current killings is to be rejected with the contempt it deserves.
Muslims in India have been concerned about these unprovoked
killings and have the moral duty to support the Central
Government which attempts to bring about peace in Jammu and
Kashmir by unilaterally ceasing military action. Kashmir is an
inevitable item on the agenda of India and the militants
operating in the Valley simply cannot besmirch India.
All extremes are bad but so is repression. As soon as we lose the
moral basis, we cease to be religious. Militants' action betrayed
the hollowness of their professed claims and they do not appear
prepared to relent from their set position vis-a-vis the Indian
Government.
H. Syed Mathani,
Tiruchi (TN)
