NBA calls off stir
INDORE, DEC. 12. The Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) here today
called off their siege of the Narmada Control Authority (NCA)
office today.
The NBA supporters, led by Ms. Medha Patkar, laid siege of the
NCA office on Monday demanding to be shown the rehabilitation
plan as chalked out by the NCA under the directives of the
Supreme Court.
The NBA also submitted a memorandum to the NCA today demanding
convening of a meeting of the dam oustees of the three States
along with the State's representatives and the NCA on January 3,
a release said.
The memorandum highlighted various issues related to
rehabilitation, U.N. expert on environment and NCA director,
rehabilitation and impact assessment, Dr. Afroz Ahmed, said
adding that in today's dialogue with the NBA, the Narmada Valley
Development Authority representative, Mr. Rameshwar Gupta was
also present.
Mr. Gupta admitted to the oustees that there are problems with
regard to availability of the cultivable land in Madhya Pradesh,
NBA sources said.
