ICC team chief happy with investigations
NEW DELHI, DEC. 13. The anti-corruption unit of the International
Cricket Council (ICC) spoke to the media here on Wednesday, but
had precious little to divulge.
Sir Paul Condon, head of the unit, spoke on behalf of his team,
which comprises Mr. Tim Gresson (New Zealand), Mr. Desmond
Fernando (Sri Lanka) and Mr. Greg Melick (Australia), apart from
the former police chief of London.
By making clear that he would not go into the specifics,
especially regarding individuals, be they players, officials or
bookies, Sir Condon virtually shot down most of the questions
before they were asked.
He, however, said that he was happy at the way the investigations
were going, and that it would take time to come out with more
findings. ``This is not a sprint, it is a marathon,'' he said
about the investigations, adding that it was as important for the
guilty to be punished as for the innocent to be cleared.
Sir Condon said the process had been pretty long in India as
well, but it was a job well done. ``The actual impact will differ
in various countries, with the laws being different. We are not
judge or jury and our task is to forward our findings,'' he said.
Sir Condon said that he had spoken to various officials,
including those of the CBI, and they all had been forthcoming. He
also said that he had met Sports Minister, Ms. Uma Bharti.
