Chennai phone book launched
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, DEC. 16. The telephone directory of Chennai Telephones,
now called "Chennai Phone Book 2000," was released here today.
Its distribution will begin on Monday.
For the first time, the directory has three volumes, including
the GETIT Yellow Pages. This time, the residential and commercial
numbers have been given separately. Volume I has entries in the
alphabetical order A to M (residential) and Volume II, N to Z
(residential). Volume III contains numbers of business and
Government establishments and the GETIT Yellow pages.
Entries upto March 2000 have been incorporated in the directory,
produced by M & N Publications.
Releasing the "Phone Book," Mr. N. Srinivasan, Chief General
Manager, Chennai Telephones, said the western parts of the city
still had a waiting list, whereas in the rest of the city, the
list was current. This is because of the higher demand in these
areas. The CD-Rom of the directory will be ready within three
months. Last year, the directory was distributed through 106
mobile and 70 fixed locations. Chennai Telephones was the first
in the country to bring out yellow pages, as early as 1987.
The first copy of the directory was received by Mr. N.B.N. Rao,
Executive Director, Indian Bank.
Mr. Ramesh Gupta, Managing Director, GETIT, said the Yellow pages
had over 54,000 free listings. It is the most comprehensive
source of information for people of Chennai and the only
directory to come out every year for 12 consecutive years.
Corrections have been incorporated upto September. The directory
has 3,176 pages, out of which 2,292 are white and 800 yellow.
Mr. P. Purushothaman, General Manager (Central), welcoming the
gathering, said the directory was being called "Phone Book" in
tune with the corporate image of the organisation.
Subscribers can exchange their old directory for the new one at
various mobile and fixed centres. The mobile centres will be open
from December 18 to 31 on all days, including Sundays and
holidays. Fixed centres, which are the respective telephone
exchanges, will be open from December 18 to January 17. The sale
copy will be available from January 22 at the customer relations
centres functioning at the areas offices.
Subscribers will have to produce the paid telephone bill dated
July/August, along with the old directory, for claiming the
directory.
