dated December 20, 1950: General Eisenhower
President Truman, announced in Washington the formal appointment
of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower as the Supreme Commander of the
Western European Defence on December 19.
The announcement said Gen. Eisenhower's experience and talents
made him ``uniquely qualified'' to assume the responsibilities of
the position.
It was understood that Gen. Eisenhower was selected for the
experience he had during the World War II in efficiently and
tactfully organising the forces of the Allied nations for the
liberation of Western Europe.
Ceasefire plan for Korea
The United Nations Ceasefire Committee was understood to have
little hope of succeeding in its mission to stop fighting in
Korea. The group had been unofficially informed by the Peking
Government that it was considered an ``illegal body'' because of
the terms of reference. The main objection raised by Peking
representatives was that the committee limited discussion to a
ceasefire without authority to deal with other Asian questions
which the Chinese Communists considered inseparable from the
subject.
These questions were: (1) The withdrawal of foreign troops from
Korea; (2) Chinese Communist membership of the United Nations;
and (3) the withdrawal of the United States' support for Chinese
Nationalists in Formosa. Highly-placed delegates in Lake Success
considered that the matter seemed to have reached a complete
deadlock.
