Jawan shoots at mob: 5 killed
By Our Special Correspondent
MUMBAI, DEC. 19. Five persons were killed when a constable of the
State Reserve Police at an outpost in Kesori village in Gondia
district, 100 kms from Nagpur, fired at a mob which had
surrounded the spot following the alleged molestation of a tribal
woman at the village's weekly market, reports reaching here said
today.
As many as 13 persons, two of them seriously, have sustained
injuries and senior police officials from Nagpur have gone to the
spot.
There are two versions of what happened.
One is that a group, enraged that a woman was molested, gathered
around the police outpost and demanded action. They became unruly
and were fired upon, perhaps even without a warning.
The second version is that some persons in uniform may have
themselves been involved in the incident and the mob that
gathered was protesting. They were dealt with extreme prejudice
by the armed personnel but the common thread in both the versions
is that the firing was indiscriminate.
