Uniform taxes on goods transport likely

By Our Staff Correspondent

GULBARGA, FEB. 20. The Transport Minister, Mr. Sageer Ahmed, said on Tuesday that the Union Government was likely to bring about uniformity in the collection of tax on goods transport and imposition of fines at checkposts on State borders.

Addressing presspersons here, he said that these issues had come up at the recent meeting of the National Transport Council in New Delhi, in which the Transport Ministers of all the States participated.

A majority of them were of the opinion that there should be uniformity in the collection of tax on goods transport and imposition of fines at checkposts.

However, he said no proposal was made for giving more powers to the authorities for punishing drivers violating traffic rules and causing accidents. He agreed that the punishment at present was not a deterrent.

To a question, Mr. Ahmed said there was no proposal to increase the bus fares of the KSRTC and other transport corporations. Even if the Union Government imposed a cess on petrol and diesel in an effort to collect more funds for the victims of the Gujarat earthquake, the State Government would not transfer the burden on the passengers.

However, he said if the petrol and diesel rates were revised, the passenger fares would be increased ``automatically''.

Mr. Ahmed said that there was also no proposal to withdraw the concessional passes given to the students, freedom- fighters, senior citizens and the blind.
