NCP protests Thackeray remarks on Gandhi, Nehru

MUMBAI, FEB. 27. The Maharashtra NCP today protested the derogatory remarks attributed to Shiv Sena chief, Mr. Bal Thackeray, who allegedly derided Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru at a function here on Monday.

``Mr. Thackeray blamed Nehru's impotence for partition of India and held Gandhi's spinning wheel for damage to the nation,'' a resolution adopted by the State NCP said. Replying to a query after releasing the protest resolution at a news conference here, the State NCP president, Mr. Baban Pachpute said ``it was upto the Maharashtra Government to initiate proper action'' on Mr. Thackeray's reported speech, made at a foundation-laying ceremony of the Veer Savarkar Memorial project.

According to Mr. Pachpute, the Sena chief also ridiculed Gandhi's utterance ``Ram Rahim saath rahenge''. The resolution said the contributions of Gandhi and Nehru to Indian nationhood was ``beyond the comprehension'' of Mr. Thackeray.
