Mockery of democracy

Sir, - The political scenario emerging after the Congress-TMC alliance with the AIADMK is really pathetic. In 1996 the Congress decision to go with the AIADMK resulted in violent scenes such as the burning of the effigies of the then Congress president. The Congress now wants to somehow regain a foothold in Tamil Nadu; and ignoring its local president, it worked through the TMC to formalise a pact with the AIADMK. The TMC chief, Mr. G. K. Moopanar, who had all along opposed the AIADMK Government, now says ``Jayalalitha will give a good government''. The AICC general secretary announces that the Pondicherry issue will be delinked, and the Congress and the TMC would fight the AIADMK and the PMK. It is all a mockery of secularism and democracy.

Sir, - Mr. P. Chidambaram is not right in airing his views against the decision taken by the TMC. If he was not in agreement with the party's decision, he ought to have quit the party and then explained why.

Sir, - This is with reference to the letter of Mr. M. R. Sathyamurthy (March 8). In his blind support to the BJP, he forgets two things. Firstly, Mr. Moopanar signalled his readiness to join hands with the AIADMK, only after he was snubbed by the DMK which teamed up with the BJP. It was the DMK which displayed opportunism in joining hands with the BJP which it fought tooth and nail for more than 50 years. Secondly, terming the Muslim League a communal outfit and non-secular is wrong. Championing the cause of a particular group of people is not communalism. It is only bad if it is done at the cost of other communities, as the BJP has been doing all along.
