GH Dean attacked, hospitalised

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, MARCH 18. The Dean of the Government General Hospital, Dr. K. Chellappan, was attacked in front of his residence in Kodambakkam by three unidentified men late on Saturday night. He was admitted to the GH with head injuries.

Dr. Chellappan said he was returning home from the market along with his friend, Mr. Victor Radhakrishnan, when three motorcycle- borne assailants came from behind and parked their two-wheeler in front of them. Before he could ask them anything, the three, carrying clubs, attacked him and his friend. They left after he fell down with bleeding injuries on his head. As he had not lost consciousness completely, he and his friend had made their way to his house.

In their shock, they had failed to note the motorcycle's registration number. All that he could think of at that moment was to get medical attention, he said.

He ruled out any possibility of previous enmity as the cause of the assault. ``I had attempted to speak to the three miscreants and find out their grouse before they clubbed my friend,'' he said. Mr. Radhakrishnan was also admitted to hospital.

Asked whether the incident could be related to a recent suspension order issued by him to a doctor, he said he was unable to speculate.

The Tamil Nadu Government Doctors Association has expressed its anguish over the assault and urged the Chief Minister Mr. M. Karunanidhi, to take personal attention to ensure that the culprits are arrested immediately.
