By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, MARCH 23.

Six personalities, including former Miss India and social activist Nafisa Ali and journalist Mr. Kuldip Nayar, were awarded the ``Shaheed-E-Azam Bhagat Singh Sadbhawana Award 2000'' here today. The other awardees were journalist Prabhu Chawla and political leaders, Mr. Kamal Nath, Mr. H. S. Hans Pal and Mr. Subhash Chopra.

The award, instituted by a Delhi-based voluntary organisation, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Sewa Dal, is given to people in recognition to their contribution towards society. It is given on ``Shaheedi Diwas'' (March 23) of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev.

The Dal's president, Mr. Jitendra Singh, urged the Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker, Mr. P. M. Sayeed, the chief guest, to take up their cause of installing Bhagat Singh's statue or portrait inside Parliament.

While taking the award on her husband's behalf, Ms. Bharti Nayar, wife of Mr. Kuldip Nayar, announced that Mr. Nayar, who was also a Rajya Sabha MP, had decided to give Rs. 2 crore from his MP's Fund for renovation of Bhagat Singh's ``samadhi''.

Ms. Nafisa Ali, while thanking the organisation, said it gave her more strength to fight for the cause of the depressed and socially weak in society.
