DMK cadres want Perundurai back

By Our Staff Reporter

ERODE, APRIL 11. DMK men are unhappy over the allotment of the Perundurai constituency to the party ally, `Kongunadu Makkal Katchi.' Originally, the high command allotted Palakodu to the Kongunadu Makkal Katchi, a Vellala Gounder Organisation, led by Mr. A.M. Raja, and the DMK announced that its candidate would contest from all 10 constituencies in Erode district including Perundurai. Mr. K.P. Swamy, chairman, Perundurai Panchayat Union, and 19 other aspirants presented a petition to the DMK chief, Mr. Karunanidhi, seeking the seat.

But it has been given to the Kongunadu Makkal Katchi. The disappointed DMK men sent telegrams to the high command urging it to get back the seat. Further, a team of 50 persons left for Chennai to meet Mr. Karunanidhi and the Youth wing leader, Mr. M.K. Stalin.

The DMK men in the constituency say that for the past six months they have been doing the spade work and had enrolled several new members to the party.

CPI unhappy

Similarly, the CPI is sore over the grant of the Perundurai seat to the AIADMK. The CPI MLA, Mr. N. Periyasamy, who was elected from Perundurai in 1996 with DMK alliance, is now seeking the seat.

The local CPI volunteers claim Mr. Periyasamy was responsible for the development of the constituency and water problems in Uthukuli and Perundurai have been eased by him. Some CPI volunteers threaten to boycott the election and abstain from electioneering work if the seat is not granted to the party.

The MDMK is also likely to be in the Perundurai fray. The Tamilaga Vivasayeegal Sangam had deputed its secretary, Mr. K.P. Sengodu, as the candidate for the constituency.

Meanwhile, the PMK is keen that its founder, Dr. S. Ramadoss, obtain Bhavani for the party, citing the high Vanniyar population in the constituency.
