Tributes to Devi Lal
NEW DELHI, APRIL 16. Both Houses of Parliament, which met after a
three-week recess, were adjourned today without transacting any
business as a mark of respect to the former Deputy Prime
Minister, Devi Lal, who died here on April 6 after a protracted
illness.
Calm prevailed in the two Houses which had witnessed 10 days of
Opposition-led turmoil over the Tehelka issue before they went in
for the recess on March 23, as Opposition parties agreed for the
obituary reference.
The Lok Sabha Speaker, Mr. G. M. C. Balayogi, recalled the
contribution of Devi Lal, who worked tirelessly for the farmers'
cause as also his role in the freedom struggle.
In the Rajya Sabha of which Devi Lal was a sitting member, the
chairman, Mr. Krishan Kant, described him as a veteran freedom
fighter, able administrator and a champion of the downtrodden.
Members observed a minute's silence in memory of the departed
leader before adjourning for the day.
