Karunanidhi desperate: Jayalalitha

By K. V. Prasad

COIMBATORE, APRIL 28. On the third day today of her campaign in Coimbatore District, the AIADMK chief, Ms. Jayalalitha, launched a scathing attack on the DMK president and Chief Minister, Mr. M. Karunanidhi, and said a fear of defeat has turned him desperate.

Ms. Jayalalitha said Mr. Karunanidhi, seized by a fear of defeat and out of sheer desperation, was making a personal attack on her. The remarks, she said, were an insult to women in general.

Having touched on all issues, including the rejection of her nominations, Ms. Jayalalitha took a different line today in an effort at wooing a large number of women who were waiting along the campaign route to see her.

The AIADMK chief began today's campaign before noon as the delayed schedule over the last two days forced her to continue her campaign in the district for the third day to cover the places left out earlier.

Addressing wayside meetings at Kinathukkadavu in Coimbatore district and at Punjai Puliampatti in Erode district, Ms. Jayalalitha said Mr. Karunanidhi was desperate to ensure that the mantle of chief ministership was fell on his son, Mr. M. K. Stalin. ``As a result, he has been very acerbic in his attack on me, as he sees me as an obstacle in his son's path'', Ms. Jayalalitha said. Mr. Karunanidhi's desperation made him throw political dignity and decorum to the winds, she said.

Ms. Jayalalitha wondered how Mr. Karunanidhi could so openly proclaim his son as a chief ministerial candidate and seek to justify it as well. On hearing about the presence of a large number of farmers at Kinathukkadavu, she pointed out to them that they had suffered because of the DMK rule and assured them solutions to their problems if they returned the AIADMK to power.

Ms. Jayalalitha addressed huge crowds at Ukkadam, Aathupalam, Podanur Pirivu, Sundarapuram, Eachanari in the Coimbatore West, Perur and Kinathukkadavu constituencies. She wound up her campaign in the district at Sevur in the Avanashi constituency.

Campaigning for the AIADMK candidate in the Bhavanisagar constituency at Punjai Puliampatti, she said if her party came to power, the Avanashi-Athikkadavu water scheme would be implemented to benefit the Gobichettipalayam, Bhavanisagar, Sathyamangalam, Perundurai and Avanashi areas.
