Help restore MGR rule: Moopanar
By T.Ramarksihnan
CHENNAI, APRIL 30. The TMC president, Mr. G. K. Moopanar, today
launched his election campaign and made `restoration of MGR rule'
the focus of his appeal to voters in the city and suburbs.
Beginning his campaign from Shastri Nagar at Adyar, Mr. Moopanar,
who has just recovered from a hip fracture, undertook a nearly
four-hour tour this evening, ending at suburban Poonamalee.
The TMC founder appealed to the electorate to vote for the AIADMK
and its allies and help restore MGR rule in Tamil Nadu. He urged
them to wholeheartedly support Ms. Jayalalitha and enable her to
become the Chief Minister again.
In Shastri Nagar, which falls under the Mylapore constituency, he
addressed an election meeting from a stage. But in the other
areas he spoke from a van.
The AICC general secretary, Ms. Margaret Alva, who accompanied
the TMC leader, charged the DMK with keeping Ms. Jayalalitha out
of the electoral fray for fear of ``confronting her directly''.
Criticising the projection of the DMK youth wing leader, Mr. M.
K. Stalin, as the successor Chief Minister, Ms. Alva mockingly
remarked ``Mr. Stalin may be a rising son, but the DMK's sun is
now setting''.
Emphasising that the ``unholy alliance of the DMK and the BJP
should be crushed'', she argued that the DMK, which formed part
of the NDA, was also party to the ``mess created by the Vajpayee
Government with the bungling on the Bangladesh border and the
Tehelka expose''.
The TNCC president, Mr. E. V. K. S. Elangovan, also participated
in the campaign which covered, among others, the T.Nagar and
Saidapet constituencies in the city.
