Principles of western astrology

PRACTICAL ASTROLOGY: Alan Leo; Crest Publishing House, G-2-16, Ansari Road, Daryaganj, New Delhi-110002. Rs. 125.

THE MESSAGE of the stars - the quintessence of this book, analysing in depth the salient features of the western school of astrology with Sun as the hub with particular reference to the character and disposition of the 12 signs and the general nature of the planets and method of casting the horoscope (western system) besides the value of the aspects is an interesting exposition on the mystic science which, to quote the author, owing to its very nature, demands a highly organised brain and a metaphysical trend of thought to grasp its true significance.

Students of astrology, however, will find in this publication the contrast and irreconcilability between the Hindu and western systems. The emphasis on symbolism, viz. use of symbols for the 12 signs of the zodiac, planets, aspects and other topics and terming the first six signs (from Aries to Virgo) as northern signs and the remainder (from Libra to Pisces) as southern signs as the points of intersection of the ecliptic and the celestial equator points to the possibility of creating confusion as a result of symbol mix-up in the minds of those who are anxious to learn the western system. The Hindu astrology is based on the fixed zodiac, as against the western system of reckoning in which all longitudes are measured by arcs of the ecliptic. The guidelines provided in the book for house divisions and the progressions may appear complex and abstruse for learners of the science.

In a rather crisp personal note for the students of astrology, the author insists on their concentration and devotion to the study. ``Always bear in mind that although all that is published concerning astrology belongs to the lesser mysteries, there is a religious and sacred side to this science as well as a practical one. The shell can never have the same value as the kernel; therefore, seek the internal meaning. The purer your life, the clearer will become your prophecy'' he concludes.
