More Internet connections than cellular phones
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, MAY 17. Penetration of Internet services in the city
compared to that of cellular telephony is better in percentage
terms, Mr. R. N. Srinivasan, Chief General Manager, Chennai
Telephones, said here today.
With three lakh Internet connections, the city accounted for 20
per cent of the total Internet connections in the country,
whereas, there were only 1.2 lakh cellular connections as against
the total of 33 lakhs in the country, he said, speaking on `the
Internet - challenges, opportunities and prospects'. The meeting
was organised by several engineer bodies in association with the
Videsh Sanchar Nigam, to mark the World Telecommunication Day.
Underscoring the crucial role of telecommunications in economic
development, he said the growth of telecom should be matched by
growth in health, education, agriculture and transport sectors.
Setting the tone for the discussion, Prof. R. M. Vasagam,
Director, TANITEC, highlighted the country's achievements in the
field of telecommunication and technology. He emphasised the need
for team work for success in technology.
