Govt. to review dairy sector

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI, MAY 26. The Government will look into the causes for the lacklustre performance of the dairies in the past few years and will take steps to ameliorate the sufferings of the dairy farmers in the State, the Dairy Development and Backward Classes Welfare Minister, Mrs. P. Saroja, told presspersons here today.

The milk scenario which was good during 1991 and 1995, had taken a beating in the past few years. The milk holidays being resorted to by societies in some districts had caused problems to dairy farmers. Also, the performance of dairies across the State needed a review. The Government would try and identify the causes that had brought the dairies to such a situation and seek to rectify the defects, Mrs. Saroja said.

The Minister said she discussed with the officials at the Madhavaram Diary recently.

She said steps would be taken to upgrade middle and high schools coming under the aegis of her Ministry and immediate measures would be initiated to upgrade some schools this year itself. Development of housing facilities for the deprived sections of the society would be given importance.

Regarding reservation, she reiterated that steps would be taken to urge the Centre to increase the quota for BCs from the present 27 per cent to 50 per cent.

On development works in her constituency, Uppiliapuram, Mrs. Saroja said priority would be given to solving the drinking water problem. Also, the State Express Transport Corporation service between Thuraiyur and Chennai via Uppiliapuram, which had remained suspended in the last few years, would be resumed tomorrow.

The long-standing demand to make the Pachamalai hills, which fell under her constituency, as a single union to facilitate its all- round development would be given impetus.
