Counselling for medical admission: parents' plea to Lt. Governor

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, MAY 29. A petition was presented by a delegation of parents of students of first year MBBS in the Vinayaka Mission Medical College Karaikal to the Lt. Governor, Dr Rajani Rai, today requesting her to enable them to have counselling again on a par with that available for other students for admission to the Arupadaiveedu Medical College in Pondicherry. It was pointed out that their children got admission as per the ranking on both free and payment patterns after the Medical Entrance Test-2000 conducted in November by the Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC) .A common merit list was drawn up for admissions to all medical colleges- both existing and proposed institutions- in 2000-2001.

Counselling for admission to the Arupadaiveedu Medical College was taking place today `without any publicity'.``Our children hailing from Pondicherry are away from their homes and suffer mentally, physically and financially for no fault of theirs, despite their meritorious performance in the entrance test'', the parents said. The petitioners wanted the Lt.Governor to ensure that their children were called for counselling again as admissions to both the colleges were made for the same academic year on the basis of the same merit list.

Since the students were under the same university, they could be given an option to exercise their choice of college.
