By Our Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD, JULY 7
A procession of `ghatams', the flower-bedecked icons of various
goddesses, on the evening of Sunday will mark the beginning of
various programmes/poojas of the 53rd annual `jatara' organised
by the Akkanna Madanna Mahankali Temple at Haribowli, Shalibanda.
The procession, starting at the Kasivishvanath temple, would
reach the Laldarwaza crossroads, from where the ghatams would be
taken to various temples for installation, Messrs G. Anand,
president, Sri Mahankali All-Temples Combined Procession
Committee, S. Ranga Rao, convener of the sports and cultural sub-
committee, and G. Rajaratnam, general secretary of the committee,
told a press conference here on Saturday.
They said a number of dignitaries, Messrs C. Krishna Yadav,
Minister for Labour, A. Narendra, MP, D.Nagender and K.Laxman,
MLAs, and M. Shashidhar Reddy, former minister, would be among
those who receive the `ghatams' at the Laldarwaza crossroads. The
procession of `Jhoolas' (devimata thottis) on July 14 and `Bali
Harana' and pooja on July 15 would be the highlights, before the
last day of the jatara.
On July 16, the concluding day, the events would include
`potharaju swagatham', `rangam' and a procession of decorated
ghatams. The procession would reach Charminar in the evening when
several Central and State Ministers would be present. The ghatams
would reach Mata Ghat, Nayapool, for immersion.
The committee leaders stated that the MCH had sanctioned for the
`jatara' Rs.46 lakhs for improving the roads and Rs.9.5 lakhs for
illumination. They said the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply
and Sewerage Board had agreed to provide water supply on July 15
and 16.
Mr. Rajatarnam appealed to the MCH to stop the work to widen the
road in Haribowl, where three temples and eight dargas are
located.
