Tuticorin engineer develops software for remote controlling
By S. Dorairaj
TUTICORIN, SEPT. 26. Can an expert sitting in his office room in
any part of the globe operate and control the devices of an
industry established in a remote area in Tamil Nadu?
A Tuticorin-based electronics engineer, Mr. R. Resington, not
only avers it is possible through the Internet but also claims
that he has indigenously developed a software with security
checks. As many as 1.67 crore parameters can be controlled
simultaneously with the system and the cost involved is much
lower than the ISD charges, he says.
Giving a demonstration on the efficacy of the software, `E-Ctrl'
(E-Control), here on Sunday evening, the young engineer showed
how a table fan, an electric motor and a tape-recorder kept in a
conference hall of a hotel in the town were operated by a person
from Boston (U.S.) through the Internet in ``less than a second
access time.''
This system ``is applicable to all industries where electronics
is used.'' They include medical, pharmaceutical, chemical,
shipping and cinema industries, besides atomic, hydro, thermal
and wind power stations. Banks, treasury, power distribution can
be covered.
The strength of `E-Ctrl' lies in the facilities offered by it, he
says. Under the system, experts can handle the devices in any
part of the world effortlessly from their home, saving travel
time and fuel. The expenditure on overheads can be brought down
without affecting the employment of personnel and hazardous
industries located in remote, uninhabited areas so as to protect
the environment, Mr. Resington explains.
Born in a middle class family, the 28 year-old engineer's taste
for inventions in the field of electronics dates back to his
school days. He hit the headlines in 1990, inventing a cost-
effective, boosterless television antenna. His creation of the
``electronic wife,'' two years later, which automatically
operated an alarm-cum-music system, water heater and coffee-
maker, won the appreciation of many.
The minimum hardware requirements for the E-Ctrl system include a
Pentium I-100 MHz, 32 MB Ram, 100 MB Hard Disk Free Space, 56 KBs
Modem, the public switching telephone network (PSTN) or the
Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) line and Hardware
Device controller (custom). Windows 95/98/Me meets the software
requirement.
The `host mode', `guest mode', `host online', `guest online',
`non-dedicated server', `check mail' and `send mail' are the
components. The `security screen helps the `host' ascertain
whether the `guest' is registered with the company or not. The
``controlling data'' from the client will be received by the
`host' and then be processed to do the necessary operations in
the server.
