Nambiar for diplomatic resolution of tensions
By B. Muralidhar Reddy
ISLAMABAD, DEC. 24. The Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan, Mr. Vijay K. Nambiar, has said India would like the issues, arising out of the December 13 attack on Parliament, to be resolved through diplomatic means rather than force.
In an informal talk here, Mr. Nambiar ruled out the possibility of Indo-Pak. tensions escalating into a war. ``Tension does exist. But we do expect that there may not be such possibilities and even if there are, they should be less. It will be better if the problem is resolved through diplomatic means.''
He said New Delhi's decision to recall him was meant to signal the importance of the issue. ``I was called back after considerable debate... It is a signal on our part. We believe that it will make people realise the importance of the issue.''
In a related development, the Pakistan Foreign Minister, Mr. Abdul Sattar, has asked India to agree to an impartial inquiry into the attack on Parliament so that ``facts can be sifted from fiction.'' A probe would help review the allegations based on ``hostility, in the light of the objective facts and reality.''
`Not enough'
PTI reports:
Mr. Nambiar said Islamabad's decision to freeze the accounts of the militant outfit, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and the announcement by its chief, Mr. Hafeez Muhammad Saeed, to quit, did not meet India's demand for a crackdown on the Lashkar and the Jaish-e-Mohammad.
Reacting to the announcements, he said ``it is not enough. We want the culprits to be brought to book.''
