Sahitya Sammelan passes resolution on Kasargod

By Our Staff Correspondent

TUMKUR FEB. 18. The three-day 69th Kannada Sahitya Sammelan, which concluded here on Sunday, has passed a resolution on the demand of Kannadigas to take over Kasargod from Kerala. In all, five resolutions were passed at the open session presided over by the President of Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Harikrishna Punarur.

The gathering conveyed its approval to each one of them by applauding, though a section of it raised an objection that no resolution was passed in regard to farmers.

Moved by Lalita and U.N.Bhat, the resolution on Kasargod called upon the Government to initiate action for its accession and, until such time, to provide all facilities to Kannadigas there. The President of the Mangalore unit of the parishat, Pradip Kumar Kalkura, seconded it.

Kayyara Kinanna Rai, writer, said the issue of Kasargod had not received due importance in the earlier sammelans, though it prominently figured in one sammelan, which he presided over. Mr. Rai said he was happy that the President of this sammelan, U.R.Ananthamurthy, had laid stress on the Kasargod issue.

Mr. Rai said the Chief Minister, S.M.Krishna, had promised him and the area MP, Ramanna Rai, that the State would begin talks on the accession of Kasargod soon. Dr. Ananthamurthy said the Kerala brethren would not oppose it.

In the second resolution, the sammelan demanded that the Government withdraw its decision permitting 300 English schools. It was noted that the Chief Minster had only withheld it.

In another resolution, the sammelan wanted the Government to prevail upon other States to open Kannada schools in the areas where Kannada-speaking people resided.

The Union and the State governments were urged by a resolution that the mining activity in Kudremukh National Park should be stopped. The Tunga and the Bhadra rivers should be protected against pollution caused by mining.

The sammelan suggested that there should be an official representative on the recruitment panel of the Union Government to monitor reservation of jobs for Kannadigas in C and D categories and industries as per the Sarojini Mahishi report.

The sammelan observed a minute's silence and mourned the death of a number of leading Kannadigas, including the former Chief Ministers, S.Nijalingappa and J.H.Patel, writers, H.M.Nayak, S.V.Parameshwara Bhat, P.Lankesh, K.S.Haridasa Bhat, cine actor, Prabhakar, among others.

The Chairman of the Reception Committee and the Agriculture Minister, T.B.Jayachandra, felicitated eminent Kannadigas from different fields.
