Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, MARCH 11. Members of different wings of the All-India Farmers Union, the All-India Farm Labourers Union, the All-India Women's Democratic Association, the Students Federation and the Democratic Youth Federation of India today courted arrest. They attempted to stage a picketing in the heart of the town to protest the hike in bus fare. T. Murugan, secretary of the CPI(M) here, said in a release the Centre through its the Union and Railway Budgets cast a heavy burden on the people by raising fares and duties. The welfare and development of Pondicherry had been totally ignored in the budgets. The decision to downsize government departments and issue retrenchment orders to 12,000 persons in the first phase indicated its anti-labour and anti-youth policies. The picketers protested the hike in LPG prices. Mr. Murugan wanted the authorities to release all those arrested today. MDMK demonstration A demonstration was held by volunteers of the Pondicherry unit of the MDMK. They came in a procession under the leadership of the former Education Minister, N. Manimaran, and held a demonstration near the Assembly to protest the bus fare hike affected by the Congress-TMC coalition ministry here.
