MUMBAI, MARCH 20. The Media Day will be unique in the history of racing in India. For the first time an entire racing day has been dedicated to the media, with as many as six trophies being presented by different publishing groups at RWITC's Sunday racing on March 24, 2002. The Times Of India, The Indian Express, The Asian Age, The Afternoon Despatch and Courier, The Hindu and Turf Printing Works (Cole) will be presenting trophies on that day. The Hindu will present a gold trophy valued at Rs. 25,000 for a three-year-old race. ``We see the media as partners in our efforts to promote racing as a family and spectator sport and what better way to strengthen out ties than to have a full race day in their honour,'' said Mr. Vivek Jain, Chairman of RWITC's Media and Marketing Committee. `` We wish to dispel several misconceptions that are associated with racing - especially its image as a gambling sport. The print and electronic media can play a big part in projecting racing as a true sport of kings as it has been traditionally known,'' added Mr. Jain. From an organisation that has been traditionally media shy, the RWITC has come a long way in its relations with press. The media is now allowed at its general meetings, several press conferences keep the media involved with the Club's big events and for the first time a media sub-committee was established a few years ago. In recognition of the role of the media, the RWITC held `The Fourth Estate Trophy' at Pune last year and the Media Day at Mumbai is a further step up in its efforts to keep the media on its side in the promotion of the sport.
