ATHLETICS: WALNUT, California: Marion Jones opened her 2002 season in an event she says she hates, breezing to an easy victory in the 400 meters in 50.46 seconds on Sunday at the Mount SAC Relays. Ladonna Antoine finished a distant second in 51.65, and Latasha Richardson was third in 51.72. Although the distance wears her out, Jones, a sprinter and long jumper, plans to run the 400 several times this year to help build strength. In other events at Mount SAC, J.J. Johnson, whose 19.88 was the world's fastest time in the 200 last year, dipped under the 10-second barrier in the 100 for the first time. Johnson ran a 9.95 to beat a strong field that included Dwain Chambers of England and Chris Williams of Jamaica. Chambers was clocked in 10.08 and Williams in 10.13. The wind for the race was a legal 1.8 meters per second. Floyd Heard, 36, won the 200 in 20.31, beating runner-up Pierre Brown (20.68) and Marquis Davis (20.70), with the 2-3 finishers also Mississippi State team-mates. Kenta Bell went 57 feet, 10 1/4 inches (17.3 meters) to become the fifth best American ever in the triple jump. The former Northwest Louisiana State athlete was the World University Games champion in the event last summer in Beijing with a mark of 56-6 (16.95 meters). Lavar Anderson was second at Mount SAC and Julien Kapak third. Adam Nelson, the 2000 Olympic silver medallist, upset World champion John Godina in the shot put, winning with a mark of 70-3 (21.76 meters). Godina was second and Janus Robberts of South Africa third. TURIN, Italy: Italian runner Alberico Di Cecco was a surprise winner in Sunday's Turin marathon as favorite Joseph Chebet withdrew after leading for several kilometres. Chebet, a 30-year-old Kenyan, won the Boston and New York marathons in 1999. Di Cecco clocked a winning time of 2 hours, 10 minutes, 27 seconds as he beat fellow-Italian Danilo Goggi by 25 seconds in this northern city. Tanzanian John Nada Saya finished fourth, nearly 1 minute behind the winner. Kenya's Anatasha Ndereba won the women's race in 2:29:27. Banuelia Mrashan of Tanzania placed second, 26 seconds behind. CRICKET: KARACHI: Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar is hoping to establish himself as a bowler of genuine quality, rather than one of simply raw pace. ``I am no longer just concentrating on speed. I am also thinking about line and length and sticking to a more consistent line. You can't be a quality bowler without that,'' he said after taking six wickets in Pakistan's crushing 153-run win over New Zealand in the first one-day international. ``I am really enjoying my cricket now. There is no pressure on me about my bowling action being suspect any longer. I have got a lot of support from the Pakistan board and my team-mates and that is enough for me,'' he added. ``When you enjoy your cricket then you tend to bowl well and in rhythm.'' Shoaib completed figures of six for 16 to reach 100 wickets in one-day internationals quicker than any player in history except his captain Waqar Younis. Waqar believes Shoaib is now a more mature bowler. ``He is not only fast, he is also bowling a consistent good line and length and trying to out-think the batsmen, which is a good sign,'' Waqar said. GOLF: HILTON HEAD ISLAND, South Carolina: Justin Leonard closed with a 2-over 73 on Sunday for a 14-under 270 total, a stroke ahead of Heath Slocum and two in front of Phil Mickelson, to win the WorldCom Classic, a feat even he considered unlikely just days ago. Slocum had a 70 and Mickelson a 71. Leonard set a 54-hole scoring record this week with rounds of 67, 64 and 66 at Harbour Town Golf Links. And when playing partner Cameron Beckman double-bogeyed the par-4 third, Leonard was ahead by four shots on the field. However, the birdies that were so plentiful through Saturday would not come to Leonard in the final round as he struggled to win his seventh PGA Tour title. He had 12 straight pars, some from amazing distances, to remain out front before his luck ran out. Leonard ricocheted an approach off the railroad ties that front the bunker at the 13th hole for a bogey, dropping him into a tie at 15 under with Slocum. Then Leonard, known for making a 45-foot (13.5-meter) putt to clinch the 1999 Ryder Cup for the United States, missed a 2-footer (60 centimeters) for par on the next hole to give Slocum a lead. This time, though, it was Slocum, a 28-year-old who won three Buy.com Tour events last season, who buckled on Harbour Town's tight fairways, huge bunkers and tiny greens. His sand shot to the 16th hole rolled about 40 feet (12 meters) past the pin. His par try was 7 feet (2.1 meters) short and he missed the putt coming back to fall to 13 under and a shot behind. Leonard, who closed with five pars, did not give Slocum another chance. GYMNASTICS: PATRAS, Greece: Svetlana Khorkina and her Russian team-mates towered above their competition at the women's European Gymnastics Championships on Sunday, despite a surprise Dutch performance. Khorkina, who won the all-around gold on Saturday, added another title in the uneven bars and took the silver on the balance beam. Russia's Ludmila Ejova won gold on the beam and Natalia Ziganshina added another in the vault. Ukraine's Alona Kvasha who beat Ziganshina to win the floor exercise broke Russia's golden sweep. Verona Van de Leur led the Dutch, winning four of five team medals at the championship: silver in the all-around event and vault, and bronze on the floor and balance beam. Team-mate Renske Endel won silver on the uneven bars. Their success was aided by the near-total absence of the Romanian squad, which won team gold at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney but missed the European competition because of injuries, its coach said earlier this week. Britain's Elizabeth Tweddle won bronze on the uneven bars and Joana Petrovschi of Romania her country's only competitor took third place on the vault. Russia's Olympic gold medallist in the vault Elena Zamolodchikova tied for fourth place in the event after stepping out of her first vault and kneeling on her second. The results: Vault: 1. Natalia Ziganshina, Russia, 9.443; 2, Verona Van de Leur, Netherlands, 9.387; 3. Joana Petrovschi, Romania, 9.131. Bars: 1. Svetlana Khorkina, Russia, 9.550; 2. Renske Endel, Netherlands, 9.450; 3.
