Govt. drivers call off stir

By Our Staff Reporter

Pondicherry April 30. The drivers of government departments who began an indefinite strike today, called off the agitation, following assurance by the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy that

their demands would be settled shortly.

The Chief Minister gave the assurance to the representatives accompanied by the office bearers of the Confederation of Associations of Employees, C. H. Balamohanan and a host of others held talks with Rangasamy in the cabinet room.

Earlier a few of the watch and ward staff of the Assembly secretariat found it difficult to manage a group of agitators forcing their entry into the Assembly premises.

With a few of the association representatives alone were permitted to hold talks with the chief Minister there was a commotion for sometime.

The drivers wanted among other things implementation of the directive of the Centre for promotion of the drivers, the extension of the promotion scheme to benefit the drivers in municipal sector, risk allowance and proper transfer policy.

The drivers had observed fast for a few days and some of the fasting members were also hospitalised with their health deteriorating.
