Arrest of `godman' demanded

By Our Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR MAY 3. The fact-finding committee of civil rights organisations has demanded the arrest of Kaleshwar, a self-proclaimed `godman' of Penukonda in the district, alleging illegal activities in his ashram. The panel also demanded seizure of ashram.

A meeting convened here last evening with civic rights and people's organisations, political parties, writers and social workers passed resolutions urging the police to register cases against Kaleshwar and provide security to the victims of Kaleshwar. The meeting also sought action against other `god men' exploiting the people.

Members of the fact-finding committee, who visited the ashram on April 28, stated that strong evidence was available to the illegal activities going on in the ashram. Activities like unearthing of hidden treasure, smuggling of ancient idols and encroachments of historical constructions were clearly evident, they claimed. They felt that violation of foreign exchange regulations, supply of narcotics, making of blue films were also going on allegedly in the ashram. They expressed concern that foreigners staying in the ashram might participate in anti-national activities.

The fact-finding committee also observed that Kaleshwar had also exploited the people in Penukonda, Bukkapatnam, Madakasiva and other areas in the name of unearthing hidden treasure. The participants at the meeting later submitted a memorandum to the Additional SP, Subba Rao.

Meanwhile, the Bukkapatnam police registered an FIR on a complaint given against Kaleshwar by one Chilamakuri Ramaseshu of Bukkapatnam
