``Such senseless killing, looting and arson around us is happening only because we have not understood the great social reformer, Basavanna's philosophy,'' Mr. Krishna said here on Tuesday. He was speaking after inaugurating the Basava Jayanti celebrations and presenting the ``Basavashri'' Award at a function organised by the Basava Vedike.
``Basavanna was responsible for social changes in the State 800 years ago. His was an `electrifying presence' in society. It may not be possible for us to follow the philosophy propagated by Basavanna in toto. But efforts should be made to follow at least some of them and save society,'' he said.
Mr. Krishna honoured Kannada journalist, Ramzan Dargah, with the ``Sahityashri'' Award instituted by the Basava Vedike. The Supreme Court Judge, Justice Shivraj V.Patil, was selected for the prestigious ``Basavashri'' Award.
The former Chief Justice of Kerala and Chairman of the Criminal Justice Reforms Committee, V.S.Malimath, said society would not benefit only if ``jayantis'' of great leaders were celebrated. "We should follow their principles in our daily life," he added.
The Suttur Math swamiji, Shivaratri Deshikendra Swamy, the Siddganga Math swamiji, Shivakumar Swamy, the Binnypet MLA, V.Somanna, the Basava Vedike President, Basavaraj S.Bommai, and its Working President, C.Somashekar, were present.
