First day's play called off

New Road (Worcester) July 31. The first day of the four-day match between India and Worcestershire was called off at 12.40 p.m. by the umpires because of rain.

Thursday's play has been rescheduled between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. In the backdrop of the New Road venue is the majestic and one thousand years old cathedral, a fine setting for a cricket match, but pools of water and light drizzle ruled out any possibility of match being played on Wednesday.

Worcestershire captain Graeme Hick said: "I have been waiting for an opportunity to see Sachin Tendulkar from first slip. Even the youngsters were keen to see him bat.''

Hick also said he would be surprised if the England selectors recall him for a Test match, but he had an outside hope of playing the World Cup. "I still love the game, that's why I am playing.'' — Our Special Correspondent
