Pak. criticises 'house arrest' of APHC leaders

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD Sept. 7. Pakistan today noted with deep concern the `house arrest' of leaders of the All-Parties Hurriyat Conference in Srinagar on Friday and alleged that it was a reflection of the despair of the Indian Government at the `rejection' of the coming elections by the Kashmiris.

In a press statement here, a spokesman of the Pakistan Foreign Office said "the Government of Pakistan has noted with deep concern the Indian Government decision to put key Kashmiri leaders, including Abdul Gani Bhat, Chairman, APHC, Abbas Ansari and Shabir Shah under `house arrest' in order to prevent them from engaging in normal political activities.

"Though the house arrest orders have been lifted, the measure clearly reflected the Indian Government's desperation at the rejection by the Kashmiri people of the planned electoral farce in the Indian Occupied Kashmir," it said.

The spokesman said continued detention of other leaders like Syed Ali Shah Geelani had exposed the claims of New Delhi about its pursuit of a peaceful and political solution to the Kashmir dispute. ``India must end its brutal suppression of Kashmiri people and agree to resolve the Kashmir dispute through a dialogue and in accordance with the wishes of the people of Kashmir," he said.
