BJP chief denies pressure on Mayawati

VARANASI SEPT.18. The Bharatiya Janata Party president, M. Venkaiah Naidu, has denied that there was any pressure from the party's central leadership on the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mayawati, not to issue a fresh notification in the Babri Masjid demolition case.

Addressing a press conference here today, the BJP chief said that Ms. Mayawati's decision was based on legal opinion and his party had nothing to do with it. Alleging that the notification issue was being raised by the Opposition due to their vested political interests, he said that there had been several Governors and Chief Ministers, including Motilal Vora and Mulayam Singh Yadav, who never took any initiative in this regard.

``As far as the BJP is concerned, we believe that allegations against the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, and other senior party leaders in the case are false and fabricated,''

The BJP chief said the Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi's 'gaurav rath yatra' had turned out to be a success.

`No change of guard'

Ruling out any change of guard at the Centre, Mr. Naidu said the party would contest the next Parliamentary elections under the leadership of the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee. ``Reports in a section of the media in this connection are baseless and there is no question of a leadership change at the Centre,'' he said. — UNI, PTI
