Fr. Mathai Nooranal dead

KOZHIKODE NOV. 29. Fr. Mathai Nooranal (74), Priest Trustee of the Indian Orthodox Syrian Church, passed away at his residence at Sulthan Bathery, Wayanad, this morning.

Fr. Noornal had been under treatment for the last two-and-a-half months.

He had contested as an LDF candidate from Sulthan Bathery in the Assembly election in 2000, and was in the forefront of the farmers' movement in the district. He was the president of the Wayanad District Formation Committee besides president of the Sulthan Bathery Service Cooperative Bank since 1960.

Fr. Noornal had served in various capacities, including as priest of the St. Mary's Orthodox Syrian Church, Sulthan Bathery, secretary and administrator Malabar Diocese, besides as managing committee member of the Indian Orthodox Syrian Church.

Fr. Noornal is survived by his wife Annamma Mathai Noornal, and five sons.

The funeral will take place at 1 p.m., on December 1 at the St. Mary's Orthodox Cathedral, Sulthan Bathery. The funeral service will be led by Baselius Marthoma Mathews II, Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan.
