The university decided to honour the octogenarian vocalist, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, one of the exponents Kirana Gharana of Hindustani music, with an honorary degree, and invited him to attend the convocation. However, Mr. Joshi, who lives in Pune, expressed his inability to make the trip to Dharwad on health grounds. Khajapeer, Vice-Chancellor, who read the citation, received the honour from the Governor and Chancellor of the university, T.N. Chaturvedi, on Mr. Joshi's behalf. In an unusual gesture, Mr. Chaturvedi asked the Vice-Chancellor to go to Pune and hand over the citation to Mr. Joshi on a suitable date. The citation describes Mr. Joshi as a "marvel". It gives mundane biographic details which hardly have a place in citations. Karnatak University is not the first institution to honour Pandit Joshi, who is from Gadag, near here. At least four universities, including those in the State, have already done so.
