This Day That Age
Dr. U. Krishna Rao, Minister for Industries, declared open in Madras on the 24th the Indian Fine Arts Society's Twentieth South Indian Music Conference and Music Festival at the Gokhale Hall in George Town, Vidwan T. N. Swaminatha Pillai presided over the conference. After prayer, Mr. J. Venkatanarayana, President of the Society, welcomed the guests and said that in 20 years the Society had catered to the needs of more than half the City's population. Professor Sambamurti said Vidwan Swaminatha Pillai belonged to a distinguished Sangita parampara; it was their good fortune he had agreed to preside. Dr. Krishna Rao observed, "Some say there is no need for two such conferences in Madras in the same month; but I do not agree. Madras is a city of distances, and I feel that each of the Sabhas, and each society responsible for a conference, has its definite place. In fact, I feel that Madras can well have many more such Sabhas."
