Tamil Nadu-Chennai
By S. Vydhianathan
The Commissioner, who inspected the energised track for two days earlier this week, gave the clearance for operating services on the electrified track. The Chief Project Manager, Electrification, P. C. Madhava Rao, said the section was handed over to the Southern Railway, which had already started operating goods trains with power locomotives. Soon long distance trains and EMU services would run on the section with power locomotives. As the Chennai Beach - Chengalpattu section is already electrified, the Southern Railway could operate passenger services with electric locomotives between Egmore and Villupuram and vice-versa. This, in turn, would reduce the running time of services. Mr. Rao said the energisation of the Kancheepuram - Arakkonam section, part of the Chengalpattu - Arakkonam electrification programme, would be taken up next month. To start with, the section between Kancheepuram and Takkolam would be electrified. As a new line had to be laid from Takkolam to Arakkonam, the remaining stretch would be taken up only after laying the track. The energisation of the section was delayed as naval authorities of Rajali, Arakkonam objected to power line installation between Takkolam and Arakkonam. They feared that the electrified track would infringe on their base. Now the issue had been resolved with the railways agreeing to lay a new line and the naval authorities bearing the cost of detour between Takkolam and Arakkonam.
