BCCI to challenge GCC

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI JULY 2. The Board of Control for Cricket in India on Wednesday announced its decision to challenge the Global Cricket Corporation for not being able to raise the promised sponsorship money for the last World Cup.

The Board president, Jagmohan Dalmiya, said a financial agency would be hired to deal with this matter. "The GCC had claimed they were the masters of the market but they didn't generate the promised amount,'' said Mr. Dalmiya even as he indicated that the Board did not want to have any confrontation with the International Cricket Council. "We're a family and want to find a permanent solution,'' he insisted. The issue had come up for discussion at the Board's Working Committee meeting here.

On the issue of players' contracts, the Board said the ICC had witheld 6.5 million USD even though the new ICC chairman, Mr. Ehsan Mani, had indicated to Mr. Dalmiya that the matter could be "negotiated.''

Mr. Dalmiya also disclosed that India did not press for any further discussion on the Mike Denness affair since the latter was suffering from heart ailment.

The Board also announced that a sum of 11.46 crore would be distributed among the players for their excellent showing at the World Cup.

The Board also decided to extent John Wright's contract as coach until September 2004. The physiotherapist, Andrew Leipus, and trainer, Craig King, will also enjoy similar contracts.

The Board, in future, would offer 26 per cent of its earnings to the players — 13 per cent to international players and the rest to be divided between junior and domestic cricketers. Soon, an insurance policy would also be introduced for all players — senior and junior.
