dated August 27, 1953: Catholics' Role in India

The Most Rev. Thomas Pothacamury, Bishop of Bangalore and General Secretary of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India, referred to certain fears and misgivings of the Christian community while speaking during Parents Day at Mount Carmel College in Bangalore on the 25th. He said that while in America from May to August 2, he had received a flood of questions about a statement by the Home Minister, Dr. Katju in Parliament that conversion activities by missionaries would not be tolerated. Bishop Pothacamury said India had a tradition for tolerance and her leaders had great esteem for the work of foreign missionaries.
