Mumbai blasts

Sir, — I refer to your editorial, "Behind the terrorist strikes" (Aug. 26). Communal violence may not end due to fear of future bomb blasts and bomb blasts also may not stop for fear of a backlash. Police too cannot frisk everyone to put an end to such outrageous acts. But ordinary people, always the victims, should realise that the politicians only capitalise on such happenings. A mass movement like the freedom struggle should emerge and take India towards a peaceful path.

K.M. Abdul Hasan,
Erode, T.N.

Sir, — Besides Jammu and Kashmir, Mumbai has become the single most targeted region. The reasons are not difficult to fathom — it is a commercial hub, has crowded landmarks, and is prone to communal tension. Efficient intelligence and law enforcement are called for. Pakistan's routine condemnation is a deceptive ploy to mislead international public opinion.

V.B.N. Ram,
New Delhi

Sir, — I was shocked on reading the editorial. Do you think terrorism needs a provocation? What was the provocation this time — the Indian junior hockey team winning against Pakistan?

Malini Balakrishnamoorthy,
Chennai
