BJD announces candidate for byelection

By Our Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR AUG. 26. Sanjib Sahu will be the Biju Janata Dal candidate for the byelection to the Birmaharajpur Assembly constituency in Orissa's Sonepur district. The Congress is yet to announce its candidate for the bypoll, scheduled for September 26. The by-poll was necessitated following the death of Baisnab Pradhan (BJD) in an accident a few months ago.

Mr. Sahu contested as a rebel BJD candidate after he was denied ticket in the February 2000 Assembly elections. He bagged 25,000 votes finishing third.

Although the BJD and the Bharatiya Janata Party jointly fought the last Assembly polls, the latter is yet to announce its support for Mr. Sahu, since the party bagged maximum number of votes in the last Zilla Parishad polls.
