Mr. Sahu contested as a rebel BJD candidate after he was denied ticket in the February 2000 Assembly elections. He bagged 25,000 votes finishing third. Although the BJD and the Bharatiya Janata Party jointly fought the last Assembly polls, the latter is yet to announce its support for Mr. Sahu, since the party bagged maximum number of votes in the last Zilla Parishad polls.
