JAMMU, AUG. 26. On the eve of the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee's visit to Jammu and Kashmir, militants killed a Border Security Force jawan in the heart of Srinagar city.

Police said that militants shot dead the jawan from pointblank range in the busy Lal Chowk area. Security forces swung into action and cordoned off the area.

Meanwhile, security agencies have been ordered to be on high alert in view of the meeting of the eighth Inter-State Council in Srinagar starting tomorrow.

A civilian was killed in shelling by Pakistani forces in the Nowshera sector. Security agencies claimed to have foiled a major infiltration bid of suicide attackers near the Line of Control in the Mendhar sector recently by killing six militants. Four of them had tied Improvised Explosive Devices on their bodies.
