WCAI camp commences

CHENNAI AUG. 26. The preparatory camp of the Women's Cricket Association of India (WCAI) for its 30 probables commenced at the Sri Ramachandra Medical College ground here on Monday.

Speaking to the press, Shubhangi Kulkarni, the secretary of the WCAI, said this was the first of the two scheduled camps in preparation of New Zealand's tour of India.

The Kiwis arrive on Nov. 19 for a month-long tour in which it plays one Test in Vapi (Gujarat) and five one-day internationals in Mumbai, Aurangabad, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai. The dates haven't yet been finalised.

Shubhangi, a former Indian captain, said the camp would focus on fitness. "It's an area that needs immediate attention. We are utilising the services of Hamsraj, a well-known physiotherapist, while Sudha Shah, also a former Indian skipper, will head the camp. Both have qualified at the National Cricket Academy," said Shubhangi.

"The schedule drawn up encompasses strengthening, speed and agility, stretching, yoga, gym work. A dietician will also work with the girls," she added.

Regarding the missing girls from Punjab, the secretary said, "the WCAI wishes to clarify that it was unaware that such a tour of England was to be undertaken. No permission was asked for and no permission was granted to any of its affiliate association."

The annual general meeting was held on Sunday where a five-member selection panel was named as against the three-member panel of earlier years. Shanta Rangaswamy chairs the committee, which comprises Rajesh Walia, Archana Mishra, Geeta Gaekwad and Mithu Mukerjee.
