Bush calls up Vajpayee

By Our Diplomatic Correspondent

NEW DELHI AUG. 26. The U.S. President, George W. Bush, telephoned the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, this evening to express sympathy for the loss of life in the Mumbai blasts on Monday.

Official sources said the Prime Minister thanked the U.S. President for his sympathy and public statement condemning the act of terrorism.

This, Mr. Vajpayee stated, was a grim reminder that the struggle against terrorism continued and India and the U.S. must work together to eliminate this threat.

According to the sources, Mr. Bush told the Prime Minister that he appreciated his personal courage in facing the threat. In the fight against terrorism, India had a friend in the U.S, Mr. Bush added.
