Drummond issued a statement on Tuesday to announce his decision to not only withdraw from the championships but also from the remainder of the 2003 athletics season. After having finished his individual event, he would have been expected to be part of the U.S. sprint relay team, but it was widely believed that the minimum sanction against him would be his exclusion from the rest of the championships. The USATF, in the meantime, stated that within the time limit prescribed by the IAAF to report back to it after an investigation into Sunday's incident, it was not possible to complete such a procedure as per its rules.
